Giotto's Ceiling deals with the revolution of the celestial image and refers to Giotto di Bondone's fresco The Last Judgement in the Arena Chapel in Padua (IT). The painter is considered to be one of the first to (re)depict the sky in blue, even in a Christian context. The medieval gold background had become obsolete after Giotto created an unrivalled impression of space with his deep blue backgrounds between 1304 and 1306. However, despite his attempt at a 'naturalistic' depiction, it is clear that the Aristotelian concept of the cosmos has not yet been superseded: In the upper corners of the Last Judgement, archangels roll up the last layer of heaven, revealing a view of the bright red celestial sphere of God.
